Natural Edge Bowl Made From Wet Wood

with Rick Angus

Part 1: Saturday, May 30, 2026, 9 AM - 5 PM

Part 2: Sunday, May 31, 2026, 9 AM - 3 PM

Turn natural edge bowls from wet local hardwoods recently cut and provided by instructor. Students will receive a refresher in the fundamental gouge and scraper cutting techniques. We focus on developing an eye for making a pleasing shape while incorporating the bark of the tree as the rim of the bowl. We touch-up your graceful bevel-guided cutting technique thus helping you to form the smooth curves of the bowl. This bowl requires a steady hand as cutting the rim is interrupted--you cut a bit of the high part of the rim then skip to the high part of the other side. We focus on careful aim to get a graceful curve through this interrupted cut. Blanks of wood will be mounted between centers and the “bowl inside the wood” will be visualized before cutting so you control that the grain pattern and bark rim position in the finished bowl. We shape the outside of the bowl, remount the blank in a chuck and cut the inside. At home, the bowls will dry and easily can be sanded with a round pad in a drill.

Fundamental Techniques In Bowl Turning

with Rick Angus

Part 1: Saturday, June 6, 2026, 9 AM - 5 PM

Part 2: Sunday, June 7, 2026, 9 AM - 3 PM

A shallow (2") functional bowl from a plank of cherry is the perfect introduction to the fun of bowl turning. Students will be trained in fundamental gouge and scraper cutting techniques and developing an eye for making the shape desired. Using these techniques, turners cut wood efficiently and leave a smooth accurate surface on their work. We learn how to use the bevel gracefully to guide the knife edge along a smooth curve and why this technique allows such smooth tool control. Any surface imperfections are smoothed with a scraper. We sand to perfection and add a quick oil finish to bring out the luster of your work. We will mount a round section of a plank on a faceplate and turn the outside profile of the bowl and provide a spigot or recess on the bottom. Using a scroll chuck, we remount the blank on the spigot or in the recess and turn the rim and inside of the bowl. Lastly, we grip the bowl by the rim in a jam chuck and finish the foot. This fundamental technique can be used to turn bowls of many sizes and shapes.

Learning to use hand tools correctly will open an entirely new woodworking experience, one that is enjoyable, very satisfying, and not as loud or dusty. Not many things in woodworking are more discouraging or frustrating than trying to use dull or neglected tools. In this twelve-week, one night per week class, you will learn how to use a handsaw and tune-up and use a hand plane, chisels, marking gauge, and marking knife. This is a skills-based class with a heavy emphasis on fundamentals, proper technique and safety. Students will be taught how to layout and execute fine joinery such as mortise and tenon, through dovetails, and half-blind dovetails. The instructor will also talk about wood movement and what can happen if you don't allow for it. During this class, students will build a traditional wall-hung cupboard with dovetailed casework and a frame and panel door using quality hardwood. Students will be required to bring some hand tools and they will learn how to make these tools perform at their optimum.
